Transportation Security Administration officers at Des Moines International Airport partnered with the Iowa Department for the Blind to help familiarize travelers with the airport security checkpoint screening experience.
Today’s visit marked the third airport tour for the department this year.
Participants began their practice run at the airline ticket counter, before moving through the airport terminal to the security checkpoint. Each practicing passenger presented their boarding pass and identification, divested their personal property and were guided through the procedures involved to clear them for flight.
Supervisory Transportation Security Officer J. Channon and Transportation Security Officer M. Meeks helped during the different stages of the screening process. They also answered questions and spoke about the screening technology.
“We deeply appreciate your compassion and understanding to what we at the Iowa Department for the Blind are trying to achieve: independence for blind Iowans,†said Nami Wallace, a participant and instructor at the Iowa Department for the Blind. “Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to help our clients with their training,â€TSA is planning to continue its collaboration with the Iowa Department for the Blind to schedule additional airport visits.
