Indian infrastructure and construction major Larsen & Turbo’s (L&T) transport infrastructure business has secured a OMR135.6m ($352.1m) contract from Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communications to construct the Al Batinah Expressway Package 4.
Scheduled to be completed in three years, the project involves the construction of a 50km-long, four-lane dual-carriage expressway, two grade-separated interchanges, seven overpass, five wadi bridges and cross drainage works, in line with international standards.
L&T said that it has the order, which was won against stiff international competition, is a good sign for its expansion of international infrastructure.
A further 11 companies had submitted bids for the package, including Nagarjuna Construction Co International, Galfar Engineering and Contracting Co, National United Engineering and Contracting Co, and Khalid Bin Ahmed & Sons.
Earlier this month, L&T emerged as the lowest bidder for the project.
L&T has also been declared as the lowest bidder for the fifth and sixth packages of the Batinah Expressway project.
The 265km-long Al Batinah Expressway will be constructed in six packages, and will start from the end of Muscat Expressway in Al Fulaij area and ends at Khatmat Milahah.
Once completed, the expressway will feature four lanes in each direction, 22 multi-level flyovers, 25 secondary flyovers at major points, along with 28 wadi bridges.
In April 2013, Oman awarded a contract for the third package to India-based Simplex Infrastructures.
The contract for the second package, which was awarded by JV of two construction firms, WCT and Oman Roads Engineering Co, was cancelled by MoTC and retendered recently.
Package 1 of the expressway project was awarded to Galfar Engineering in 2012.
