The Rail Planning and Policy is focused on developing the knowledge on planning, economics and use of heavy rail. Enhancement of the quality of the rail network and its use is pivotal. The political and economic organisation of developing rail networks and customers’ satisfaction with train use are key elements in the programme. Also this year, lots of interesting presentations will be available on those topics, which include:
- Regulation and reform: International comparison of rail reform: what effect has EU liberalisation had? What is the best model? Stresses and strains for UK train operators. A close look at Railways in Albania and The Williams Rail Review, perspectives on its implications for the rail sector in Great Britain.
- HUBS: The importance of interchange, the impact of intermodal nodes in urban and metropolitan mobility and measuring station access, egress and interchange times.
- Distance and borders: learning from major projects like Thameslink, competitive tendering on railway services and an essential international link for integrating logistics, markets and tourism.
- Rail and Perception: understanding train perception to define a targeted communication strategy and assessing passengers safety perception
- Trains and behavioural response: Returns on marketing investment in the rail industry, developing a train interior which fits the needs of customers, spending time on the train and the use of twitter by passenger train operating companies
- Trip timing: economic cost of headway for regional rail services, and estimating intercity rail passengers’ willingness to pay for shifts in departure times and retiming Britain’s Railways.
- Connecting Economic and social activity: the impact of new rail stations on deprivation and rail commuter growth in London and Dublin: understanding its causes.
