Alstom has announced that it will equip around 13 DB Cargo’s freight locomotives of the EG3100 series with the latest ETCS signalling technology standard (ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2) for freight traffic between Germany, Sweden and Denmark.
In compliance with the latest European standards for rail interoperability, Alstom’s Atlas ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2 solution will enable locomotives to operate efficiently, safely and reliably, even while running across national borders.
For communicating with the ETCS signalling system, the current German and Danish systems will be improved as part of the order.
The Swedish system will also be incorporated as software into the new ETCS hardware.
With a retrofitted prototype, Alstom stated that the first certification runs will take place at the end of next year, soon to be ensured by the gradual retrofitting and approval of the remaining trains.

With Baseline 3 Release 2, the latest software development will offer interoperability for the entire rail system.
DB Cargo management board for production member Ralf Günter Kloß said: “By equipping our powerful EG 3100 series locomotives with ETCS equipment, we will also be able to offer climate-friendly, cross-border transport services for our customers in the future.”
