Aalborg Airport hopes to be at the frontline when it comes to new technology and good service. Aalborg Airport has entered a contract with Lyngsoe Systems, involving the completion of a research and development project called Nordjysk Innovation Center for Aerospace Technology (NILTEK).

In 2010, we installed a luggage solution in the form of RFID technology. We use informative luggage tags that have built-in chips with extended information on each piece of luggage from the start of the destination to the final destination.

Automatic self-service baggage drop

The fully established RFID system has enabled the next technological step of Aalborg Airport: automatic self-service bag drop with RFID baggage tags, which allows passengers to check in their baggage quickly and easily without having to stand in line for personal assistance. All the technological benefits that came with the RFID system is implemented in the new baggage-drop with a built-in memory tag, which stores the passengers travel information and ensures prompt treatment as well as track-and-trace.

With this new automated self-service bag-drop system, Aalborg Airport is once again at the forefront when it comes to technological advances in airport services. We are the first airport in the world where this unique system exists.

Why this system?

Aalborg Airport is in a constant development, and with an increasing number of passengers and more routes, it is important to continuously develop and apply optimisation strategies to meet the new requirements. Therefore, the new self-service drop-bag system has been installed. This will allow passengers to print their boarding passes and baggage tags at self-service machines and easy ‘drop off’ their luggage without employee interactions. It will accommodate a larger number of passengers and increase passenger flow.

The main purpose of the the automatic self-service bag drop system is to create a faster and easier travel experience for passengers, where potentiality for a comprehensive development of the quality of service will increase. Another important consequence of the installation of self-service is the optimisation of airport infrastructure, resulting in fewer traditional check-in desk. It is our goal to be as cost-effective as possible, thereby ensuring that we are able to compete effectively. Our aim is always to optimise our cost structure so that airlines operating from Aalborg Airport will experience a competitive airport.

How did it happen?

The bag drop system is the result of a collaboration between DSG Systems, design firm, Marcus Pedersen and Aalborg Airport. An original model of a self-service bag-drop system of DSG-Systems was the starting point for the new system. It was our vision that the system should be fully automatic, which could be realised through innovative solutions and RFID. Aalborg Airport’s collaborator in the design of the new terminal’s modern furnishing, Marcus Pedersen, came to be in charge of a final design solution.

The final result of this process was a modernised version of the original model from DSG Systems, where tag scanners were removed using RFID to make it fully automatic. The design is simple and the materials used are visually similar to those, which were used in the interior design of the airport, in order to ensure the modern consistency and maintain the valued identity of Aalborg Airport.
