The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in Qatar has awarded engineering consultancy firm Hyder a $112m contract for the design and construction supervision of a new section of the Doha Expressway.
The contract for ‘pre and post-contract professional consultancy services’ is divided into four separate projects for concept design review, preliminary and detailed design, construction contract preparation, tender services and construction supervision services.
Hyder will provide services for the P22 Al Khor Bypass in north-east Qatar, which includes 35km of Expressway with four major junctions, three running lanes and one hard shoulder on either side of the central median.
The company will also provide services for P25 Al Khor Expressway and Al Khor to Umm Birkah Road, which includes 26km of Expressway and 13 major junctions, three running lanes and a hard shoulder on either side of the central median, in north-east Qatar.
Further work includes construction supervision services for P60 Lusail Development External Road Phase 1, west of the Lusail Development, to upgrade the 4km section of existing dual carriageway; as well as P60 Lusail Development External Road Phase 2, west of the Lusail Development, to upgrade 8km of existing dual carriageway.
The first and second phases of P60 will include four running lanes and a hard shoulder either side of the central median, along with the construction of six major intersections.
Among other service requirements across all four projects are the provision of collector, feeder, service and access roads, footways and cycle ways where necessary.
The design will link up with the metro red line, which is currently planned to be located in the wide central median along the Al Khor Expressway.
Hyder Consulting regional managing director Wael Allan said: “The Expressway Projects is the second largest contract to be awarded to Hyder since the announcement of Ashghal’s C2 project in November 2011.”
The Expressway Projects programme as a whole comprises 28 projects including both construction of new roads and upgrading existing roads to ‘expressway’ standard.
Once completed, the Expressway Projects will improve traffic flow, increase safety, reduce congestion and cut travel times, while providing improved environmental outcomes.
