“Progress Rail has already delivered Tier 4 passenger locomotives in the state of California that meet lower emissions standards set by the U.S. EPA. Today, we are pleased to share that PHL will utilize our latest switcher locomotive and continue to operate with a lower fleet emissions footprint – vital for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles,†said Gary Eelman, Vice President of Transit, Leasing and Repowers at Progress Rail.Progress Rail, a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., and Pacific Harbor Line, Inc. (PHL) hosted port officials today at the Port of Long Beach in conjunction with the nearby American Association of Port Authorities’ convention for a closer look at Progress Rail’s single engine U.S. EPA Tier 4 certified switcher locomotive, the EMD24B. As previously announced this year, Progress Rail’s EMD24B has been successfully completing its California Air Resources Board verification testing with PHL, and the companies are pleased to announce that as a result, PHL has confirmed it plans to lease the unit.
The EMD24B is powered by a Cat® 3512C HD engine and was constructed with remanufactured core parts, offering a sustainable solution for railroad customers.
“PHL is pleased to work with Progress Rail once again and looks forward to leasing the new EMD24B, not only for its performance, but also to continue to create awareness of the need for implementing greener technology in the ports,†said Otis Cliatt, President of Pacific Harbor Line.
While at the port event, attendees also had the opportunity to view PHL’s state-of-the-art facility in Long Beach. PHL will operate the new switcher locomotive in and around the port area once the verification testing has been fully completed.
